Marshall, Chief Judge of the United States District Court, Central District of California, the first woman to hold this post and the first and only African American woman west of the Mississippi River to be Chief Judge of a District Court and Reverend James M. Lawson, Jr. Rev. Lawson, is a world reknowned spiritual leader and peace advocate who worked in the Civil Rights Movement at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and served as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for fourteen years.

Program support for the September 13, Quintard Taylor conversation has been provided by the Huntington - USC Institute of California and the West and Friends, the Foundation of the California African American Museum.  CAAM is grateful for their vision in helping us to share our artistry, document our stories and preserve our histories.

  • Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 6:30-8:00pm - Journalist Leonard Pitts

Leonard Pitts, Jr., a nationally-syndicated columnist, won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004.  He is also the author of the bestselling book Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood, which drew on his own childhood experiences.

Although originally hired by the Miami Herald to critique music, he was soon offered his own column and began to write extensively on race, politics and culture.  In his acclaimed column published September 12, 2001, entitled "We'll Go Forward From This Moment," Pitts described the toughness of the American spirit in the face of the 9/11 attacks.  The column was widely circulated and the response from readers catapulted him to national recognition.

After graduating from USC in 1977, Mr. Pitts worked as writer and editor for Soul magazine in Los Angeles.  His awards for writing include those from the Society of Professional Journalists and the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
